BIO
Randy Steinke discovered his passion for painting during his college years through courses in painting and art history. Since then, he has painted intermittently, but various life circumstances eventually guided him back to painting, which he now embraces as a full-time profession. Randy’s work is deeply rooted in figurative expressionism, characterized by bold, vibrant colors and figurative subjects. He employs shapes and forms to create compelling, cohesive compositions that capture both emotion and energy.
In his artistic practice, Randy draws significant influence from the portrait drawings and paintings of Henri Matisse, particularly in his exploration of composition, color, and complex backgrounds. Moving forward, Randy is focused on refining his techniques in his paintings, seeking to elevate the details of these elements.
Randy is committed to continuing his exploration of expressive color and form in the world of contemporary figurative art.
Artist Statement
When I look at the world around me, I see shapes emerging from textures, colors, and the play of light and shadow. I begin by photographing figurative subjects, which serve as the foundation for creating a dynamic composition. The goal is to form something cohesive and intentional, focusing more on the arrangement of shapes than on color at first. As I work, the shapes gradually take shape and suggest subtle color choices.
Once I’m satisfied with the overall composition, I begin envisioning colors that will enhance the forms. The first color introduced often leads to the discovery of others, with each one influencing the rest in a delicate balance. My focus is on exploring composition, color combinations, and abstract flat backgrounds, while continually refining my painting techniques.
For me, each painting is an intentional experiment, a journey that builds the groundwork for future experiments.
